about

9 on Bali uses a variety of kalimbas and mbiras from Bali and Kenya to create a complex layered fabric of melodies and rhythms. “Numbers”, “Monkey Forest Road”, and “Raya Ubud” showcase the more technical aspects of the music, while “RSM” and “All Night” are playful, creating a celebratory mood. Then there’s the meditative “February Rain” full of subtleties for the ears. Tingkliks, Rindiks, and other percussive instruments contribute to the overall sound adding a bit of Gamelan Jegog (the Bamboo Gamelan) into the mix. 9 on Bali’s layered approach combined with its use of distortion on the kalimbas evoke a sound similar to the Congo’s Konono #1 or even a fusion of styles similar to the US band Shadowfax.
